What Is CBN and What Are Its Benefits?
The cannabis plant keeps on surprising us. First, we learned about a psychoactive compound called THC that also has exceptional health benefits. Then, we discovered non-psychoactive CBD and all the health benefits that it offers. Now, researchers have found more cannabinoids that are quickly showing their own benefits. We’re going to go over a cannabinoid you may not have heard much about yet called CBN.
What Is CBN?
CBN stands for cannabinol. Like CBD and CBG, CBN is a non-psychoactive compound (as far as we know) found in cannabis and hemp plants. It is produced when THC oxidizes and ages. That makes it more prevalent in older cannabis. As time goes on, the heat and oxygen that THC becomes exposed to converts into CBN. This cannabinoid can also be produced from THC extracted out of cannabis.
You won’t find a lot of CBN in fresh or cure cannabis. The cannabis has to have been exposed to a significant amount of oxygen. Leaving cannabis out and exposing it to the air is one way of getting more CBN, but it’s not as efficient as special products that exist containing isolated CBN.
Benefits of CBN
Now that you know what is CBN, it’s time to take a look at what the benefits of CBN are. Here is what we know so far about how CBN can help improve our health and wellness.
Acts as an Antibacterial
There have been studies done that indicate CBN can act as an antibacterial. When tested on the MRSA bacteria, it was found that it was able to fight off infections thanks to it. That is very encouraging, given that MRSA is antibiotic-resistant.
Has Neuroprotective Protective Properties
CBN has immense neuroprotective properties. A study done on rodents found that CBN can be an effective treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS. In fact, it can delay the condition’s onset! This is a promising study that suggests CBN can be effective as a treatment for neurodegenerative conditions like ALS.
Studies done on rats also show that CBN can increase appetite. This makes it a great alternative to THC, which also stimulates appetite but also produces a psychoactive high that isn’t always wanted. This is a promising study that hopefully translates as having the same effect on humans.
People suffering from the effects of glaucoma can find relief thanks to CBN. A study done on rabbits uncovered that CBN could reduce the amount of intraocular pressure someone has. This means that CBN may not only treat glaucoma but even help prevent it. That’s because the intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for glaucoma.
Has Anti-inflammatory Properties
Another rodent study found that CBN has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. This is a major find because inflammation is often a cause or symptom of many diseases. People suffering from conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can get relief from their painful symptoms.
Cannabis and hemp plants have over 100 cannabinoids. We are only now beginning to learn about all the health benefits of CBN, CBG, and other compounds this unique plant contains. While the research is still slim when it comes to CBN, what we know already should be enough to excite you about its current proven benefits.
